"Monday September 4, 1944: under a beautiful sun, Mâcon is liberated. Preceded by the resistance fighters who had invested the city early in the morning, the tanks of General du Vigier's 1st D.B. entered Mâcon around 4 p.m., cheered by a cheering crowd."
The strategy of the maquisards and the 1st French Army paid off for the liberation of Mâcon.
The 1st Army which fought in Villefranche the day before and the harassment of columns by the maquis, the German troops preferred to establish a new line of defense further north (we can cite Autun for example).
After liberating Cluny, the FFI troops rushed towards Mâcon and on September 3 Mâcon was surrounded. The Germans evacuated the city. On the 4th at 8 a.m., the resistance fighters entered Mâcon without shots being fired.
Mâcon is released without a fight.
