Portrait of a División Azul volunteer called Alejandro Ángel Juan Marcos taken before leaving Madrid in 1942. We can read in the back " Souvenir from Alejandro Juan Marcos, missing in action in Russia in 10th February 1943". He served in the served 7th Company II Battalion of the 262 Infantry Regiment "Pimentel". He died on 10th February 1943 at the battle of Krassny Bor, near the swamps of this village, being considered missing at around 8:00-12:00, three days after the village was recaptured and his body was found. As a result of this battle 3127 spanish were killed, 1035 wounded and 300 captured and the soviet had more than 20,000 casualties. Operation Polar Star ended up in failure for the Soviet Army. Krassny Bor is considered the biggest battle that involved spanish troops during the Second World War.
