This photo was taken during the Continuation war after Finnish forces advanced to Petrozavodsk (Петрозаводск) and captured the city. During the Finnish occupation the name of the city was changed to Äänislinna and things reminding of the former Soviet ownership such as some monuments were removed. The square in the photo used to have a large statue of Lenin in the middle of it, but the Finnish forces removed it and replaced it with a Finnish field gun.
